Thursday night/Friday morning was the annual one night count for King County coordinated by the Seattle/King County Coalition for the Homeless. An amazing effort by 900 volunteers, all focused on getting a snap shot of who in our community are living without a roof over their head.

As a volunteer having completed the count, it is eye opening and soul wrenching to count the number of individuals struggling through difficult periods in their lives. As we strolled down the streets and alleys in the area…

Sharp Tick Upward in NYC Homeless Count

The New York Times reports this morning that the number of people who were found homeless and outside during NYC’s One Night Count in January rose by 34% over 2009. Officials blame the harsh and tenacious recession.

Other cities around the country are yet to report their One Night Count results — excepting Seattle/King County, which saw a reduction this year of about 75 people. Locally, there’s been a lot of effort to create…

Homelessness in the News, part 2

Here are the early results of last night’s One Night Count in King County.

Last night, hundreds of volunteers for the Seattle/King County Coalition on Homelessness fanned out throughout the County.  Between 2:00 AM and 6:00 AM, more than 130 teams of volunteers found 2759 people sleeping on the streets, in parks, in their cars, in temporary shelters and in makeshift campsites.
