Molly Nordstrom, United Way’s 2009-2010 board chair was the only female member of the Climb for the Community team. Molly describes the experience of climbing Mt. Rainier as “humbling” and “truly beautiful and spiritual.” She also says that it’s a good thing that the team started their summit ascent in the dark because, “If you had seen what you were climbing in broad daylight, you might not want to take it on.”

The Climb for the Community team started their two-day ascent to the summit of Mount Rainier at about 9:45 a.m. today and should reach Camp Muir by 5:00 p.m. The hike to Camp Muir is nearly 4.5 miles and will take them up to an elevation of 10,060 feet.
The Climb for the Community team spent all of yesterday on the lower slopes of Mount Rainier training in “mountaineering day school.” This morning climbers started their two-day trek to the summit.

The only woman participating in the Climb for the Community–Molly Nordstrom–is United Way of King County’s board chair and an active community volunteer. Though she is a novice hiker, Molly is an experienced marathon runner and no stranger to physical challenges.
