You stood up. . .

and made Hunger Action Week 2013 our biggest and best ever.

What does this mean? It means that twice as many people as last year stood together to talk, learn, share and take action against hunger and food insecurity in our community.

By the numbers:

  • 5 –  Number of dollars generously donated by Car Toys for everyone who participated.

  • 7 – The daily dollar limit for anyone who bravely took the Food Stamp Challenge this week

  • 151 – Rockstar volunteers joining

How Hunger Relates to Summer Meals
The free and reduced-priced meals that low income children receive during the school year are wonderful in that these children are provided with well-rounded meals during the day to help them learn and grow. But what do these children eat during the summer months when they are not in school? Many of their guardians try to save money knowing that they will not be getting fed at school; however, this is certainly not happening in every low income family.

    After

How YOU can help feed more kids this summer

During the summer, children who eat meals through the free and reduced meal program at school do not have access to this service. The Summer Meals feeding program was set up to meet this need. The Summer Meals program is already feeding lots of kids, but it could feed even more with your help. Read more for some ideas on how you can get involved.

What have we learned from the food stamp challenge?

It is our last day taking the Food Stamp Challenge, and it’s amazing how much this experience has raised our awareness and changed perceptions about food on many levels.  It’s been a difficult week, and while I know that the whole family is excited for me to go and do our ‘normal’ grocery shopping trip tomorrow, there are several things we will all take from this going forward.

One thing that became very clear through our experience participating in Hunger Action Week was…

What works on the Food-Stamp Challenge?

Guest blogger and United Way of King County Campaign Co-Chairs Dan & Annie Wilson share with us their Food Stamp challenge experiences this week – Day 4.

So – the kids are kind of in the routine of Hunger Action Week now. I made pancakes for breakfast today from the huge package of mix we were able to buy at the beginning of the week. That brought smiles for sure and it really felt good to be able to say “Yes, there’s plenty more…

How hunger relates to public policy (and what you can do about it!)

Welcome to Hunger Action Week Day 4!

Many of you have blogged, tweeted, or shared conversations about hunger this week, thanks! Today, we’ve asked our policy experts, Carol and Marlo, to introduce us to the state and federal programs critical to lifting millions of families out of extreme hunger, and how you can advocate for them. They give us the following.

Nationally, 50 million people struggle to put food on the table and 1 in 7 Americans benefit from the

Join Forces to Support Hunger Action Week

There has been a lot of discussion around the role of the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) in alleviating hunger, but fortunately, it is not the only program or option available to help those struggling with hunger.  Nationwide, aside from SNAP, there are various programs that help folks get more to eat, including Summer and At-Risk Afterschool Meals programs through USDA; the Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) program; and the Free or Reduced Lunch Program that is offered in schools across the country.  Locally, we

Painful choices while shopping on food stamp budget

Guest blogger and United Way of King County Campaign Co-Chairs Dan & Annie Wilson share with us their Food Stamp challenge experiences this week – Day 3.

It’s Wednesday morning and the fridge is looking very empty. We have $65 remaining and have had many discussions about how we can best use these dollars. I am going to the grocery store today and the kids all agreed I should shop where I could get the most for our money. They even suggested sacrificing quality for…

How hunger relates to eating, learning, and sharing together

Welcome to day three of Hunger Action Week!

The  experience of sharing a meal together empowers us to learn, talk, share and take action in a whole new way.  Guest written by Jess, our AmeriCorps VISTA working with Seattle Tilth, following is an overview of the Rainier Valley Eats program,  which has brought thousands of people together to learn, share, talk, and take action against hunger in the Rainier Valley.
