May 8th: Help Stamp Out Hunger

Have you been thinking about donating to your local food bank? Well, your mail carrier is about to make it a lot easier. On May 8th, you can take part in Stamp Out Hunger, the nation’s largest single day food drive. Letter carriers in more than 10,000 communities will collect food items and deliver them to local food banks to help some of the millions of Americans, including an estimated 16.7 million children who face hunger every day.

Here’s how you can help:

Hunger Action Week has been over for almost a week now but we still have a few last minute items to take care of!  So here goes:

    One last recap:

  • The Hazel Bloom had two (no wait, three) main takeaways from the Hunger Challenge:
“My main takeaway was, jeez: This takes time. It took the better part of a Sunday to plan our meals and figure out

Well, Hunger Action Week is officially over!  We think it was another successful campaign that helped bring hunger to the forefront of many people’s minds.  Near 500 of you signed up to be a part of the campaign, over $1,000 was raised, and through  everyone’s conversations — bloggers, commenters, media, conversations — thousands of people recognized the importance of hunger and going without.  I want to send out a huge THANK YOU to everyone…

Well, here we are at the end of the Hunger Challenge, having fed our family of six (including one infant) for an average of $25.21 per day.   With a dad who used to work full-time for a food bank, our kids hear regularly about how lucky…

    Gardening for the Greater Good

One of the main issues facing local food banks and the clients who rely on them is a lack of fresh produce. Commonly donated items tend to be canned and dry goods, which are great, but don’t make for a very well rounded diet.

Fortunately, there are numerous ways to help stock food banks with healthy, fresh, locally grown fruits and vegetables. Programs such as Solid Ground’s Lettuce Link aim to improve access to fresh produce to low-income individuals in Seattle.…

Day 4 of the Hunger Challenge is nearly in the books, and my thoughts today have turned mainly to my health. As an insulin-dependent diabetic (I inject five times per day), this week has presented a unique set of…well, challenges beyond just trying not to think about being…

    Donate to Yes We Can!

As part of Hunger Action Week, United Way is raising money for a cool project that will save food that normally would go to waste, bring more food to the emergency food system, and leverage tons more money than the project actually costs.

The project is called Yes We Can!

Here’s the basic concept: a local cannery in South King County will donate the facilities two days a week for local emergency food providers. With this time, we will take excess foods that…

In addition to all of the great feedback on the site this week about our Hunger Challenge, here are a few other items that I wanted to let folks know about:

  • Last night in King County and this week in many places around the country, volunteers headed out into the night to perform the annual One Night Count.  Information gathered from these ‘moment in time’ assessments is used to
