On Friday, September 21st, during United Way of King County’s Day of Caring (http://www.uwkc.org/ways-to-volunteer/day-of-caring/), I visited the Shoreline Children’s Center in Shoreline, Washington. I arrived at the site about 11:00am on a not so sunny, somewhat chilly part of the day and was amazed at how many people were hard at work on the annual playground maintenance project! As soon as I arrived, I was introduced to Marilyn, a staff member of the Shoreline Children’s Center and the Day of Caring Playground Maintenance Staff…

Promising Future- Children with developmental disabilities/delays

To ensure that children with developmental delays/disabilities reach their highest potential, United Way of King County supports programs throughout the county that address their needs. We know that a critical piece of success for these children is direct support and engagement from their parents and families. When parents learn their child has delays, they may feel scared, helpless and powerless. But when they are connected to services and information that support and nurture their child’s development, parents feel empowered and supported as a result.

Yesterday, the United States Department of Agriculture released new data regarding their Current Population (CPS) Food Security Survey from 2011. The USDA defines food security as having access by all people at all times to enough food for an active, healthy life. Sadly, the assessment results of food security showed that this is not only untrue for all people in our country, but that results were similar to past years—or showing further signs of low food security in some instances. This is illustrated by the fact that…

Save the Date for Day of Caring 2012!

Could your organization benefit from the help of a group of enthusiastic volunteers? On Friday, September 21st United Way of King County will be holding our annual Day of Caring event, which matches nonprofits with volunteer groups from local companies in a county-wide day of service. Last year, over 11,000 people from 125 companies volunteered with over 300 local nonprofits…all in one day. Registration for nonprofits will open in May, and volunteers will begin signing up in late-July. We hope you’ll join…

The day that keeps on giving. . .

The kitchen at Seattle’s Union Gospel Mission (UGM) serves roughly 27,000 meals every month to those in need. Each night for dinner, they see approximately 350 guests in their small cafeteria, located in downtown Seattle. That’s a whole lot of chopping and dicing for the three cooks on staff, tasked with preparing enough servings to go around.

After spending Day of Caring volunteering in the Kitchen at UGM, a group of Seattle area lawyers, led by volunteer Mari Horita, got to experience first-hand all the…

Great work, great stories

One of my favorite things about working here at United Way of King County is hearing the stories from people that are out there doing good work.  11,000 volunteers worked at projects for United Way of King County’s Day of Caring on September 16, and I’ve had the pleasure of hearing about a number of their experiences.  I thought I’d share some of them with you from volunteers who have blogged about their day of volunteering  Here are some of the ones that I’ve found so far.  If you’ve got…

It really is the optimal way to do more

Today, I am moving on. After three years working in the Brand department at United Way of King County, I’m saying my farewells.

My first encounter with United Way of King County was in the late ’90s. I was working as a copywriter at Nordstrom, and the fall campaign season was kicking off.  There was an event called “Day of Caring,” and coworkers were signing up. The more I heard, the more I wanted to join in. It sounded like an amazing thing–and it…

Volunteers take over King County on September 16th!

As you may have heard, United Way of King County’s Day of Caring is the single largest day of volunteering in Washington State, and this year we anticipate over 10,000 people will spend the day volunteering with local organizations. That’s huge! Already, 9,000 people have signed up to volunteer all over King County, including groups from Microsoft, the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, AT&T and many more.
