KING 5 News mentions the Seattle Seahawks’ involvement in United Way of King County’s Climb for the Community up Mount Rainier. Seahawks CEO Tod Leiweke and head coach Jim Mora are part of the climb team. It’s the start of a new workweek. And Jon Fine’s day as CEO of United Way of King County looks nothing like a usual Monday.

That’s because it’s Day 1 of the Climb for the Community, an effort to raise money and awareness for United Way’s Response for Basic Needs, which provides food, shelter and hope for people hit by the economic downturn.

As many Americans did this weekend, I celebrated our nation’s birthday by doing what else–grilling with friends and family. At one barbecue I attended, I was surprised and delighted to find United Way-branded Jones Soda in the cooler. The bottles feature Seattle Seahawks head coach Jim Mora and are helping to raise awareness about United Way’s Climb for the Community.

The only woman participating in the Climb for the Community–Molly Nordstrom–is United Way of King County’s board chair and an active community volunteer. Though she is a novice hiker, Molly is an experienced marathon runner and no stranger to physical challenges.

NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell is getting a lot of attention for his participation in United Way of King County’s Climb for the Community. The 50-year-old sports executive was a three-sports star athlete in high school and has been underdoing a rigorous training regimen in preparation for the climb up Mount Rainier.

    We asked people to give us 5, and they did…and more! Yesterday, we raised exactly $4,500 in online donations for the Climb for the Community. It’s amazing that we did that in just one day! The money will go to United Way’s Response for Basic Needs, which will provide housing, food and support for people being hard hit by the economic downturn. Funds from the Response are already making more food available for food banks and meal programs. The overall plan is to…
