Strengthening Our Community

In the fall of 2008, the United Way of King County’s Community Building Committee approved a new structure that included the implementation of the Strengthening Our Communities Impact Council which replaced the Youth, Older Adults, Health/Mental Health, Domestic Violence/Sexual Assault and Employment Impact Councils and the allocations from System Support. Volunteer members were recruited that served on each of the subject/population specific councils along with new volunteers to provide a diverse stream of geographic and content knowledge.

This group is charged with making annual allocation recommendations and developing and implementing an Impact Plan that will guide United Way King County’s future investments in these areas. The Strengthening Our Community Impact Council Impact Council began meeting in June, 2009.

Mission:
The intent of the SOC Council is to work effectively in an integrated way to strengthen the “safety net” of services throughout all communities in King County.  This requires regular communication with the other UWKC impact and advisory councils including New Solutions, Out of the Rain and Early Learning as well as working closely with other funders and the grantee agencies that we support through annual allocations.

Our Work:
SOC is in preparation for a winter 2009 allocation process that will allocate funding to non profit organizations in the areas of Youth Development and Older Adults effective July 1, 2010. Concurrently the council is beginning development of its Impact Plan that will identify UWKC’s key roles and an investment strategy for the areas that SOC covers.

Hi, Shana. I’ve forwarded your comment to Yuri Kim. Many of us who write for the blog cover homelessness, but he and Patrick Kelley produce a lot of posts around homelessness.

    Thanks,
    Madeline
