We bought our groceries at the beginning of the week. Spent $80.50. Great deals and fresh food at Rising Sun Market, good deals and interesting food at Trader Joe's, and the rest at Safeway, where we reduced the bill by $.18 by bringing our own bags. Had to make some tough choices and adjustments to our plans. Asparagus was too expensive and we traded down to broccoli. Same thing with the peppers; we would have preferred red peppers but could only afford the green. Haven't been hungry this week, but I have been food insecure. Also a bit grumpy about my limited choices, particularly in the dessert department. I was worried we'd run out of food, but that didn't happen. It seems possible to live on food stamps, but it isn't easy. I feel very fortunate to have the resources to not worry about food or my family's food choices. This exercise is a real lesson in what many people go through, and really increases my resolve to help. Jon Fine

Hi, Alice. It's awesome to hear that you will be participating in the Hunger Challenge. It will be interesting to see how the challenge applies to a family of five.
