Hunger Action Week 2009
Join United Way April 20-24 to create a hunger free community.
Growing numbers of people in King County—our neighbors, co-workers and friends—don’t have enough to eat. People have to choose between paying rent and buying groceries, and children are going to bed hungry.

Hi, I just found out about the Hunger Challenge from another Seattle Food Blogger on the FoodBuzz network. I am really excited to participate in this challenge. I plan on doing the challenge as a family of 5 focusing on portions, meal planning, utilizing store specials, and healthy dishes. I will be sharing my experience on my food blog http://savorysweetlife.com. I also will be following the other Seattle Foodbuzz Food Bloggers who will be taking the challenge also.
Hi, Alice. It’s awesome to hear that you will be participating in the Hunger Challenge. It will be interesting to see how the challenge applies to a family of five.
We bought our groceries at the beginning of the week. Spent $80.50. Great deals and fresh food at Rising Sun Market, good deals and interesting food at Trader Joe’s, and the rest at Safeway, where we reduced the bill by $.18 by bringing our own bags. Had to make some tough choices and adjustments to our plans. Asparagus was too expensive and we traded down to broccoli. Same thing with the peppers; we would have preferred red peppers but could only afford the green. Haven’t been hungry this week, but I have been food insecure. Also a bit grumpy about my limited choices, particularly in the dessert department. I was worried we’d run out of food, but that didn’t happen. It seems possible to live on food stamps, but it isn’t easy. I feel very fortunate to have the resources to not worry about food or my family’s food choices. This exercise is a real lesson in what many people go through, and really increases my resolve to help. Jon Fine
