You stood up. . .

and made Hunger Action Week 2013 our biggest and best ever.

What does this mean? It means that twice as many people as last year stood together to talk, learn, share and take action against hunger and food insecurity in our community.

By the numbers:

  • 5 –  Number of dollars generously donated by Car Toys for everyone who participated.

  • 7 – The daily dollar limit for anyone who bravely took the Food Stamp Challenge this week

  • 151 – Rockstar volunteers joining

  • How hunger relates to eating, learning, and sharing together

Welcome to day three of Hunger Action Week!

The  experience of sharing a meal together empowers us to learn, talk, share and take action in a whole new way.  Guest written by Jess, our AmeriCorps VISTA working with Seattle Tilth, following is an overview of the Rainier Valley Eats program,  which has brought thousands of people together to learn, share, talk, and take action against hunger in the Rainier Valley.

How hunger relates to your county, city and neighborhood

Welcome to day two of Hunger Action Week!

Yesterday, we stated that food insecurity is a widespread, national problem. However, we also stated that inability to access healthy and nutritious food is a symptom of bigger socioeconomic factors, which affect thousands of American neighborhoods. Okay, but what does hunger look like in my neighborhood, and what am I supposed to do about it? I am so glad you asked.

The Communities Count website does a pretty good job of demonstrating food insecurity across…

How Hunger relates to. . . You!

Welcome to Hunger Action Week 2013

If you’ve signed up for Hunger Action Week, you’re one of 4,000 King County residents who have come together to learn, talk, share and take action against hunger in King County. Maybe, like Mayor McGinn, this is your first Hunger Action Week. Maybe, like mother of two Kristine you’re a Food Stamp Challenge veteran and have been doing this for years. Regardless, thank you for making Hunger Action Week 2013

Rainier Valley Food Insecurity Survey: Volunteer Recap

This past Saturday, as part of Hunger Action Week, a group of more than 60 volunteers set out with clipboards in hand to survey residents of Seattle’s Rainier Valley about hunger and food insecurity in their community. Volunteers surveyed more than 550 residents, and were able to collect valuabe information that will help United Way of King County better understand the effectiveness of current hunger relief programs in the area, and inform how we can address hunger in our community moving forward. Kaitlin Bartik was one of…

Hunger Action Week 2012: Hunger Challenge Blogroll Day 5 & Final Reflections

For those of us who work in the world of hunger and food security, it’s been hard to ignore the media and excitement around the release of the The Hunger Games film, based on the book by Suzanne Collins.  I myself am a fan of the series and am currently on the third book and plan on seeing the movie next week.  For those who don’t know, the Hunger Games is about a futuristic post-apocalyptic society where a totalitarian government called The Capitol…

Hunger Action Week 2012: Hunger Challenge Blogroll Day 4

Drumroll please… Let’s see how our Challengers did today!

DJ Sharlese at KEXP gave us a review of the Hunger Challenge rules and how they apply to real life, saying that if she was in the position of having to worry about money and food all the time, she would use food she already owned, such as canned goods, and would most definitely accept free food from family, friends, whoever.  Well, I must say I agree; however, the rules aren’t really meant to mimic…

How Hunger Relates to: Children & Education

It’s hard to imagine anything more disheartening than a child who is eager to learn and grow, but can’t focus in school because they are hungry.  However, the fact is that numbers of hungry children in America have risen to 16.2 million in 2011, including 39,280 hungry children in Washington state (Source).  The February release of the local Communities Count report, revealed an even more shocking statistic: that nearly 50% of Hispanic households with children in King County are food insecure.

Hunger Action Week 2012: Hunger Challenge Blogroll Day 3

I have a confession to make and it’s pretty bad… I’m not taking the Hunger Challenge.  The reason why I’m not doing it is even worse – it’s because of coffee.  It’s been the most common denominator in the plights of our bloggers – one they’ve overcome in some creative ways.  Coffee is expensive and a luxury for many, but it’s something I’ve grown to love and respect… and expect on a daily basis.  I just couldn’t give it up –…

Little Eagles’ Orcas Tell Us About Hunger

Today, Nora Peters and I went to Little Eagles to talk to the Orcas about Hunger Action Week. When I was first invited, I spent a great deal of time thinking how I could talk about the issue of hunger to children who range in ages from 3.5-4 years of age. I didn’t want to throw hunger facts at them, but I wanted them to understand the importance of our food choices. I decided to take a page out of Ellen Gustafson’s book and just…
