Stamp Out Hunger on May 11!
In the past few months, we’ve celebrated the many ways that people are heading out into their communities to create a Hunger Free King County. Now, let me tell you about Stamp Out Hunger, an opportunity that literally comes to your doorstep in next month.

What is Stamp out Hunger? Put on by local post offices, Stamp Out Hunger is the largest food drive in the nation, taking place next month. You’ve probably gotten a Stamp Out

You stood up. . .

and made Hunger Action Week 2013 our biggest and best ever.

What does this mean? It means that twice as many people as last year stood together to talk, learn, share and take action against hunger and food insecurity in our community.

By the numbers:

  • 5 –  Number of dollars generously donated by Car Toys for everyone who participated.

  • 7 – The daily dollar limit for anyone who bravely took the Food Stamp Challenge this week

  • 151 – Rockstar volunteers joining

  • How hunger relates to eating, learning, and sharing together

Welcome to day three of Hunger Action Week!

The  experience of sharing a meal together empowers us to learn, talk, share and take action in a whole new way.  Guest written by Jess, our AmeriCorps VISTA working with Seattle Tilth, following is an overview of the Rainier Valley Eats program,  which has brought thousands of people together to learn, share, talk, and take action against hunger in the Rainier Valley.

How hunger relates to your county, city and neighborhood

Welcome to day two of Hunger Action Week!

Yesterday, we stated that food insecurity is a widespread, national problem. However, we also stated that inability to access healthy and nutritious food is a symptom of bigger socioeconomic factors, which affect thousands of American neighborhoods. Okay, but what does hunger look like in my neighborhood, and what am I supposed to do about it? I am so glad you asked.

The Communities Count website does a pretty good job of demonstrating food insecurity across…

How Hunger relates to. . . You!

Welcome to Hunger Action Week 2013

If you’ve signed up for Hunger Action Week, you’re one of 4,000 King County residents who have come together to learn, talk, share and take action against hunger in King County. Maybe, like Mayor McGinn, this is your first Hunger Action Week. Maybe, like mother of two Kristine you’re a Food Stamp Challenge veteran and have been doing this for years. Regardless, thank you for making Hunger Action Week 2013

Good Food, Good Health, Good Life on a Budget

When it comes to living and aging well, nobody should be forced to choose between good nutrition and paying other bills–especially not in a resource-rich city like Seattle! On March 8, the Advisory Council for Aging & Disability Services and United Way of King County welcomes all Seattle-area seniors to our Good Food, Good Health, Good Life on a Budget event.

Join us at Southeast Seattle Senior Center on March 8 from 11:00 – 1:30…

Basic Food questions? Get your answers here.
  • Did you know that Basic Food (food stamp) benefits enable thousands of King County families to eat and live better every day?
  • Do you help people apply for Basic Food, either as an outreach specialist, or as a Bridge to Basics volunteer?
  • Have you ever had questions you wished a Basic Food expert from DSHS could help you answer?
  • We’re off to a good start!

On Jan. 15, United Way launched its biggest Free Tax Campaign ever.  Nearly 700 people joined the team as volunteer tax preparers, interpreters, intake volunteers and Bridge to Basics specialists. Together they’ve served hard-working, low income families by helping them access their greatest possible tax refunds and essential public benefits.

After just three weeks, here’s our first round of numbers:

  • 75 families are on their way to receiving Basic Food (food stamp benefits)
  • 2,400 tax returns have been filed.
  • $4 million in refunds are coming back hard-working
  • Last year, our Free Tax Preparation Campaign team worked to file thousands of tax returns for low-income families. Meanwhile, the Bridge to Basics team was working to help those same families apply for life-changing, year-round benefits like Basic Food and health care for their kids. For some of our volunteers, this was a life-changing experience.

This year, we want to help even more families access benefits that can improve their daily lives.

You can help us! If you’re outgoing, friendly and compassionate…

    Let’s talk about good food.

Like a lot of King County residents and people across the country, I get pretty excited about food that is nutritious, sustainable, and delicious–which is why I want to tell you about Food Day on October 24th. It’s a well-known fact that diets based on high-calorie but low-nutrient, processed foods are contributing to skyrocketing rates of heart disease, obesity, and diabetes across the country, while at the same time, millions of American families struggle to put healthy food on the table each day. …
