Free tax prep services available until April 17!

Joann Brown, a single mother from Bellevue, didn’t know what to expect from this year’s tax return. She had been laid off earlier that year and could not afford the services of an accountant, so she came to a United Way of King County Free Tax Preparation site for help filing her taxes.

Anyone who has ever worked in an office knows that it’s a dangerous place for dieters. There is always someone with a bottomless candy bowl and, savvy meeting organizers often use pizza or donuts to entice people. Free food can be especially difficult to navigate during the Hunger Challenge. The next time your stomach rumbles take a moment to remember why you took the Hunger Challenge in the first place.

Hunger Challenge Pitfall #3: Hunger

Yes. It is possible to eat for $7 a day (that’s the maximum food stamp benefit for an individual, by the way). But chances are, if you have really, truly followed the rules of the Hunger Challenge you are starting to worry. You worry that you may not have enough food to get you through the next two days.

How to navigate Hunger Challenge pitfall #2: Boredom

As we wrap up day two of the Hunger Challenge I would first like to congratulate everyone who has made it this far. It’s not easy, I know. And guess what? It gets harder, or at least it did for me when I participated in the Hunger Challenge two years ago.

Why? I got bored.

How to navigate Hunger Challenge pitfall #1: Coffee

When I signed up for the first Hunger Challenge two years ago, I knew coffee would be the greatest threat to my success. This year, my mission is to help others like me who love coffee, but want to fully participate in the Hunger Challenge.

Jack Bausch started volunteering to read to children at Kent Family Center three years ago. Every week he stops by for one hour to read to children one-on-one. This extra attention is preparing them for school in big ways.

For nearly 40 years, residents of South Park, a neighborhood in South Seattle, congregated for breakfast at the County Line Restaurant and Bar. In particular, it was a favorite gathering spot for local seniors.

When the restaurant closed in 2009, it was a group of seniors who decided to create a new breakfast hang out, one that catered to their community’s needs. They approached the South Park Senior Program with the idea of a free community breakfast for low-income seniors and homeless people.
