United Way Bridge to Basics volunteers keep the heat on for the holidays

Last week United Way of King County was thrilled to host two special volunteer events, organized in partnership with the City of Seattle PeoplePoint program and our very own Bridge to Basics program. Together we put on two volunteer phone banking nights to call clients who had applied for City of Seattle benefits but were still missing key information from their applications after an initial letter from the City. Breaking ground and breaking bread at Rainier Beach farm

The recent release of new national poverty, health coverage, and income figures for 2010 has sparked a flurry of discussion and debate about poverty in the United States. The U.S. Census Bureau published its report on September 13, galvanizing diverse groups to present analysis and policy suggestions.

    The USDA has just released its report on Household Food Security for 2010 and it contains some disturbing findings – proof of the continuing national trends in failure to meet basic needs, especially since the 2008 recession. As a supplement to the annual Current Population Survey, the report analyzes data taken from 44,757 representative households all across the country.
