Last March, a woman came into one of our tax sites after not filing for several years. That fact scared her a little bit, but not as much as the fact that she was two months behind on her mortgage and was about to lose her house.

Somehow, she managed to put together all of her paperwork and come in. We went back as far as we could (four years), and when we were done she was getting a refund of over $10,000. Ten THOUSAND dollars. You see, you’re only really in trouble not filing by April 15th if YOU owe THEM money…not the other way around. You can file up to 4 years later and still qualify for your full refund…(no interest, of course, because that would be…I don’t know…fair?)…so anyway, she was able to save her home. And she didn’t have to pay someone 15-20% of her refund to do it.
