Have you started planning your Hunger Action Week meals?
As you probably know, eating on a budget requires some serious planning and creativity. Gone is the luxury of throwing a pint of icecream into the cart because you have a craving (that pint of icecream just ate up half your daily food budget). While most of us budget-shop to some degree, participating in Hunger Action Week is probably going to force most of us to pay much closer attention to food prices than we are used to. A great way to plan low-cost meals is to check out the weekly sales at your local grocery store. Many stores, like Safeway and QFC make their weekly ads available online, so you can compare the deals at all the different stores to figure out how to save the most money. If you can’t think of a meal to concoct using the random combination of sale items your local store is offering, try the ingredient search at allrecipes.com. It allows you to enter what foods you have available and then finds recipes that call for all of those ingredients. Food blogger Michelle Zack of FavoriteFreezerFoods.com has posted her menu for Hunger Action Week. Check it out if you’re looking for some ideas. In the meantime, we want to hear from you! What are some other ways you save money at the grocery store?

Many savvy shoppers hit up surplus or salvage grocers like Grocery Outlet to make their dollar stretch further. Here is a recent Wall Street Journal article on the topic:

Day 1: This is definitely a challenge. Yesterday when I went grocery shopping I was able to get enough food for three meals a day, but no snacks and worst of all, no coffee! I am going to have to cheat a bit there otherwise I’ll go through caffeine withdrawls!
